One call to action that has arisen from the Black Lives Matter movement is to support black-owned businesses. If you are reading this, you may be wondering what that looks like, especially if you do not know of any in your community. Before we get into that, let’s first talk about why it is important to support black businesses.

Why We Should Support Black Businesses
The main reason to support black businesses is that black business owners face inequalities in lending that white business owners do not. Your support of black-owned businesses can serve to reverse this inequality.
Another reason to support black-owned businesses is that, in turn, it provides support to those businesses’ communities. Opportunities for economic equality is then extended to those communities because now those business owners can hire more people from, and thereby create income for, the people in the neighborhoods they serve.
How to Support Black-Owned Businesses
The hardest part my be narrowing down your choices; there are so many exceptional options. Find at least one to support and:
- Purchase their goods or services.
- Follow them on social media and share their posts regularly.
- Refer your friends and associates to them.
- Subscribe to their website newsletters.
Where to Find Black-Owned Businesses
Maybe the best way is through Support Black Owned. You can search both by state and by category, on this website. Categories include not just retailers, but services as well. You can also add your black-owned business on this website. They also have a handy app (see below).

Black Business Spotlight
The following are the black-owned businesses that I have decided to support to start with; there are certain to be others added to this list:
Beauty Bakerie
The bakery theme of this makeup product line is very creative. Visiting the website is a fun user experience that includes being given a recipe card of all the ingredients you will need to achieve your look. Check it out here.
Twelve AM Co.
This is a local black-owned business for me. Not only are their shoes a delight for the eyes, they give back to the community through “Passionate & Prepared,” a nonprofit organization that provides students with school supplies and the community with workshops on financial literacy. Support their cause and shop for cute shoes while you are at it!
Hyper Skin
I am very excited to try Hyper Clear! Who doesn’t want clear skin? Plus it is made with natural ingredients, is affordable, and can be used with the products I already use. To learn more about this product, visit Hyper Skin.
Black Girl Sunscreen
I can’t help but think about how my mother made me wear sunscreen whenever I hear anyone say black people don’t wear it. Yes, we do get sunburned too! I remember my one and, hopefully only, time that I did very well so I was so happy to discover this black-owned business makes sunscreen for black people. Order your Black Girl Sunscreen just in time for summer!
A Good Message
This is my personal favorite of the spotlighted black owned businesses, and not just because it is owned by a member of my family! I also love that the mission of A Good Message is to be a light in the world. With 2 Corinthians 2:14-15 as its foundation, these handmade gifts come with inspiring messages designed to uplift the soul. We can all benefit from some encouragement, right? The fact that these gifts are also sustainable makes them the gifts that keep on giving. Shop for candles at A Good Message now.

Thank you for posting these resources! I do research on the brands I use, but aside from knowing the name of the CEO I often don’t search for photos or know what they look like. I’m certainly more curious now and am enjoying learning more about the founders and executive boards of companies.
