Closet Organization Tips

This week, before the mandatory Stay Home order, a professional organizer came to help me reorganize my one and only closet. She began by taking everything out of my closet and made me go through each article of clothing to decide whether to keep it or donate it.

This was not an easy thing to do because I tend to want to keep things around just in case: One day I might need that top versus I hardly ever wear that. I decided to let go of the things I hadn’t worn in a year and was proud of myself that I ended up with two large bags in my donate pile. That was a good start!

Next, she put all of my clothes back into the closet for me, and then explained her system: hang them light to dark, cardigans first, followed by tanks and sleeveless tops, then short sleeve to long sleeve tops and blouses, followed by button-downs, sweaters, turtlenecks, and last dresses.

She also gave me tips on which types of hangers to use and the best way to hang pants.

What I found about working with a professional organizer is that she brought instant motivation. There was something about having someone there with a plan that made a task that I was dreading something I could not wait to get started on. Unfortunately, we were so eager to get started, we forgot to take any before pics. So consider the above the before pics because there is still a few things left to do to finish my closet.

If you are in the L.A. area and would like to have a professional organizer help bring order to your space, I highly recommend Space to Love. Christel was a pleasure to work with, and I can hardly wait to find out what project she recommends we tackle next.

  • Cardigans first
  • Tanks & sleeveless tops next
  • Short sleeve to long sleeve tops & blouses
  • Button-downs
  • Sweaters, short sleeve to long sleeve
  • Turtlenecks
  • Dresses
  • Hang pants, seat out and to the left
  • Hang belts at the very front
