You Are a Prize to Be Won: A Reflection on Love and Worth in God’s Eyes

I first discovered Wendy Griffith through her book You Didn’t Miss It! after watching an interview where she spoke about its message. I ordered a copy right away and began reading one chapter each night — until Valentine’s Day approached and doubt quietly crept in. I started to wonder if maybe I had missed it. Maybe this was simply Wendy’s blessing, not meant for me. Eventually, I set the book aside.

I never could have imagined that almost two years later, I would meet Wendy in person.

She was warm, humble, and incredibly approachable — so much so that she was helping set up the brunch where she was the guest speaker. When she introduced herself, I told her I had a copy of You Didn’t Miss It! and asked if we could take a photo together. It was then I learned that the book I owned was actually her second. As I listened to Wendy share about her first book, You Are a Prize to Be Won, and testify to God’s faithfulness in her own journey, I knew I needed to start there.

After the brunch, I purchased a copy of her first book. Inside, she wrote:

I read one chapter each night — and this time, I finished it.

The Core Message

This book affirmed for me what I have discovered on my journey as well — and what I have sought to share on my blog — that a woman’s worth is measured in God’s eyes not by the world’s standards. And yet, many of us can relate to the belief that love is something that we must earn, or that being single beyond a certain age means we are behind, overlooked, or somehow not chosen.

Rather than reinforcing those narratives, Wendy invites readers to reflect honestly on our personal experiences with love and prepares us to navigate romantic relationships in God-honoring ways, offering guidance for real-life questions we might face along the journey. She gently reframes love as something rooted in dignity and intentionality, encouraging women to engage in relationships in ways that honor both their faith and their value.

Personal Reflection

As I read, one truth that kept returning to my heart is the importance of not making excuses for a significant other’s bad behavior, a reminder I didn’t realize how much I needed.

For me, I have a tendency to give people the benefit of the doubt in all relationships, not just romantic ones. Even when I see behavior that feels unacceptable, I often assume their intentions are good and give them the chance to “do the right thing.”

What opened my eyes in reading Wendy’s book is the permission to recognize early on when someone’s behavior is intolerable. I realized I had been carrying the belief that I should always consider the possibility that I might be misunderstanding them. I worried that calling it out too soon might make me seem judgmental, defensive, or even scare someone away before I fully understood their character.

Wendy’s guidance helped me see that honoring God and my own worth means setting boundaries and trusting my discernment, even at the very beginning of a relationship. Love doesn’t require tolerating behavior that diminishes me — it calls me to stand in the value God has already given me.

Whether in romantic relationships, friendships, or family dynamics, this reminder resonates deeply: we are free to recognize behavior that is unacceptable without guilt or hesitation.

And ultimately, as Wendy inscribed in my copy of her book:

“You are a Prize to be won! God has best for you.”

Psalm 37:4 reminds us to delight in Him, trusting that His plans for love and life are always perfect.

If you’re looking for a book that affirms your God-given worth and encourages healthy, faith-centered relationships, I highly recommend Wendy Griffith’s You Are a Prize to Be Won.
