7 Ways to Renew Your Mind as a Daughter of God

Once we accept Jesus as Savior, we are not done; if we are to experience new life in Him, we also have to renew our minds.  The world has its way of doing things and we are inundated by those ways every waking hour.  If we are not careful, we will conform to those ways.  That is a no-no (Romans 12:2).  God has His way of doing things and Jesus teaches us about them in His Word.

Read God’s Word

The Holy Bible opened to John 14:6

It is our responsibility to spend time reading God’s Word so that we can learn how we really are supposed to live.  We renew our minds when we make Jesus our Lord and live in the way He instructs us.

Prepare Your Heart

Read God’s Word with an open heart.  God’s Word is the seed and our hearts are the soil it is planted in (Mark 4:14).  So when we read God’s Word, we need to make sure that it will be planted in good soil (Mark 4:20).  Before you read God’s Word, make sure it is not out of obligation or with skepticism.  When I first read the whole Bible, my heart was open to receive it because it was something that I always wanted to do, and because the year that I did, I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to do so.

I was really worried that I would have a hard time understanding God’s Word, but my desire to learn was greater so I prayed that I would understand, and I did; understanding was instantaneous!  Make sure, then, that you pray before you begin reading the Bible and use a translation that you understand.  I chose Amplified because it really explains everything, but NLT is another easy to read version.

Feed Your Spirit

As Jesus teaches, we cannot live on food alone; we also need God’s Word, all of it (Matthew 4:4).  While I agree that daily Bible study is important, I also believe it is equally as important to read the whole Bible.  The context that you gain from having done so is invaluable.

It provides a foundation for Bible study, church sermons, even life because having read it all yourself, along with receiving understanding from the Holy Spirit, you will have background knowledge to draw on and will not have to rely on others’ interpretation, which may be wrong.

Your spirit will be fueled and able to withstand the lies of the enemy because you will be able to discern for yourself what is true and what isn’t.  This is important, for our hearts to be good soil.  Otherwise, our hearts will be overpowered and the enemy will take the seed, the Word of God, away (Mark 4:15-19).

Live God’s Word

It is not enough to just read God’s Word, nor is it enough to study it or even to understand it.  We also need to apply it to our lives.

Make Godly Decisions

Here are some choices that we as women have to make according to Becoming God’s True Woman (2012):

  • What it means to be a woman.  (What God says or what the world says?)
  • How you’ll interact with men.  (The way God says or the way the world says?)
  • Your wardrobe and appearance. (The way God likes or the way the world likes?)
  • Your ideas about romance. (From God or from the world?)
  • Your approach to dating. (God’s way or the world’s way?)
  • Your physical and sexual conduct. (What God says it should be or the world?)
  • The boundaries you’ll observe. (The one’s God set or the world?)
  • Your perspective on marriage. (From God or from the world?)
  • Your schedule and habits. (From God or from the world?)
  • Your goals and priorities. (According to God’s purpose or your own?)

Every day, we face situations that give us an opportunity to do what Jesus has taught us to do.  When we obey Jesus and do things as He taught, we demonstrate our love for Him, we make Him our Lord (John 14:23).  With Jesus as our Lord, we will succeed because when we abide in Him, He abides in us, making our way fruitful (John 15:4-5).

“Therefore see that you walk carefully [living life with honor, purpose, and courage; shunning those who tolerate and enable evil], not as the unwise, but as wise [sensible, intelligent, discerning people]”

– Ephesians 5:15 AMP

Guard Your Mind in Christ Jesus

In every circumstance, we should pray, and in so doing, our hearts and minds will be guarded in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7). It is wise to develop the mind of Christ; it is our purpose. Follow His example and meditate on His character.

Win others to Christ by being a demonstration of His love in this world (1 Corinthians 2:14-16).

Understand Your Purpose

In renewing our minds, we should remind ourselves of our purpose: Our purpose is to live for God’s glory, to bring glory to God in everything we do.  How can I glorify God in this situation? is a question we should be constantly asking ourselves.  The Virgin Mary set an example of an appropriate response to the Lord (Luke 1:38). We are servants and should all also be so willing to be used by Him.

We should be thankful that God’s Word has and is the authority in our lives.

A prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your word and the guidance it gives us for how to live our lives.  Please give us the power to turn our eyes away from worthless things that tempt us.  Help us to receive Your ways only, and continuously renew our joy in them.  In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Until next time,

Blessings!
