My Walk with God

I once wanted to run, but every time I tried, I failed. I was determined, though, so I was excited when I saw an article about how to build endurance. It advised, run one minute and then walk for two and repeat for a total of 10 minutes. And then the next time, run two minutes and walk two for a total of 10 and so on. When even this strategy did not work, I gave up. But God did not.

Years later, after starting a new gym membership, I prepared to walk on the treadmill when I felt God nudge me to run. I respectfully reminded God of my previous failed attempts, but He insisted that I try again and this time, run as long as I could, not in increments as I had done the last time. I had tried this before unsuccessfully, but on this day, I was able to run for 10 straight minutes! This was quite an accomplishment for me, someone who had previously only been able to run for three.

At that time, I only went to the gym once a week on Saturdays. (We have to start somewhere!) So the following week, I was amazed when I was able to run for 14 minutes. And even more so when I ran for 20 straight minutes the week after that. But the most amazing thing to me was that God had been faithful to give me this desire of my heart, especially since I myself had given up. I also marveled that God was with me at the gym, encouraging me to trust Him that He would be interested in helping me reach my fitness goals.

As it turns out, God is a great Personal Trainer! I went from running for 20 minutes a week to running for 20 minutes a day. Then I went from running a 14-minute mile to a 12-minute mile to a 10-minute mile. After about five straight years of running two miles a day, five days a week, I had to hang up my running shoes and find something lower-impact. I knew that whatever that would be, God would be right there, every step of the way.
