As it gets darker earlier, it can be tempting to trade in your active lifestyle for a couch potato one. Binge-watching Netflix is very appealing at this time of year! However, heading into the holidays is actually the perfect time to remain or become active. This year, it may be a challenge because of the constraints of Covid, but it doesn’t have to be. There is still plenty to do to get or stay fit, even if you don’t feel comfortable working out in your gym.

Fall Fitness Tip 2: Get Outdoors
I really enjoy getting outside for some additional physical activity to go along with my at-home workouts. All summer, I went bike riding at the beach. Not only was it fun, but it was great exercise. Now that summer is over, I still plan to get some outdoor workouts in. Fall is a great time to do so. Take advantage of the cooler weather and the beautiful views of the fall colors and go for hikes, like I hope to do, or go on a regular walk or a run in the park.

Another way to get in some exercise outside is to rake leaves, do some gardening, or mow the lawn. Some other outdoor activities to try: skating, biking, playing frisbee with your children (or dog!), or playing sports like basketball or beach volleyball, if you are on the coast. Just remember to practice social distancing!
Fall Fitness Tip 3: At-Home Workouts
While I much prefer working out at the gym or fitness studio, that is simply not something I will do during this pandemic. So at-home workouts it has been for me for the last year and a half! The benefit of having an at-home workout routine is that you do not have to worry about venturing out as the weather gets colder. That’s not a problem here, but in some places, snow has already arrived! Plus, there are many options of free at-home workouts on YouTube that can help keep things interesting. Whenever my barre instructors offer intensives, I sign up for them because they offer something different than our three main classes: classic, empower, and reform. It is fun and motivating when there is a new workout mixed in on occasion.

Fall Fitness Tip 4: Learn Something New
I learned barre, and before that I learned how to run. Fall is a great time to learn a new activity; that’s when many classes begin, and this includes fitness classes. What is something that you have always wanted to learn? Maybe you want to learn how to box?
Or maybe you are a big fan of Dancing with the Stars and feel inspired to learn how to ballroom dance? Now is the time to go for it! 💃🏾🕺🏾

Fall Fitness Tip 5: Be Consistent
I cannot stress the importance of having a fitness routine enough. When you have a routine, you will not have to worry about making “start working out” your New Year’s resolution every year because it will already be a habit.
Having a routine is one way to be consistent. Another way is by having someone to be accountable to. This is where being in a class is helpful; having classmates to workout with is motivating. And when you miss a class people notice so you are less likely to be absent. Or maybe you have someone you walk or run with. Having a workout buddy makes working out a lot more fun.
Another way to stay consistent is by finding something that you enjoy doing. If you do not enjoy running, for example, try crossfit, or try something low-impact like swimming, barre or pilates. Keep looking until you find a workout that you enjoy, and then stick with it.
And do not forget to eat healthy! You will thank yourself for saving up those calories for cheat meals come Thanksgiving. 😋
